DELTA
|
|
| Europe's
richest and most beautiful wetland ecosystem is found on Romania's Black Sea coast. After flowing
2,860 km across Europe from its source in Germany's Black Forest, the river Danube spreads out into
a spectacular delta. The variety of its unspoiled landscapes, the richness of its fauna - birds in particular - and its sheer size, have long attracted visitors. This unique natural habitat formed out of channels and lakes, floating islets, reed marshes, lianas, and forests of willow and poplar, shelters over 300 species of birds, some sufficiently rare to enjoy legal protection. The waters are home to over 100 different species of fish. The main occupation for locals in Danube Delta is fishing. They still use traditional rowing boats, which can access through the narrow channels to the large lakes, some of them over 5000 ha. The best way to see the birds in their habitat is to approach with a fisherman's boat, as birds are used to them and get not frightened. A real paradise for those who want to discover the wild nature, but also to taste some good fish, and enjoy local gastronomy, the Danube Delta is a real challenge for nature lovers.
